Q: How long are you away for?
A: I'm in Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa. I came here in October 2023 and will be here for six months.
Q: Why are you taking the opportunity to work remotely?
A: I really love surfing and was without an apartment back home in Denmark, so I thought, "Why not settle down abroad for a period of time where I can surf a lot and avoid the cold gray winter back home?".
Q: What value does it give you to be able to take your work abroad?
A: It gives me a huge amount of freedom to have the life I want alongside my work, which is traveling and surfing a lot right now. The fact that my work doesn't prevent me from following my dreams gives me a massive sense of peace and security, as I don't have to choose between my dreams and my career.
Q: How does collaboration with your colleagues work when you're remote?
A: Of course, working remotely is different than being physically in our office every week, as you don't have the same opportunity to chat at the coffee machine or play a game of foosball. However, I don't notice a big difference in our professional collaboration. I've become good at reaching out to my colleagues via Teams, and I also take the initiative to talk about anything and everything when the time is right.
Q: Why are you taking the opportunity to work remotely?
A: COVID-19 ruined our plans to spend a semester here for my girlfriend's studies. Everything was in place: study, courses had been chosen, and my boyfriend had started applying for scholarships. All we needed was a visa and plane tickets. At the time, there was a longer wait for a visa due to COVID-19, and eventually, it was announced that you could only enter the country if you were from Australia. So we agreed to do it when she finished her studies, which is now.
Q: What value does it give you to be able to take your work abroad?
A: It allows me to continue my ongoing projects without handing over or rolling off. It also gives me the financial freedom to continue to work three days a week and live down here without eating up our savings, which would otherwise be used to find a place to live when we return.
Q: How has the collaboration with your colleagues worked while you were remote?
A: Det fungerer faktisk ret godt. Jeg er gået ned i tid, mens jeg er afsted, så jeg arbejder kun tre dage i ugen, morgener og aftener. I Sydney er jeg ti timer foran Danmark, så jeg arbejder fra kl. 07:00-11:30 og 18:00-21:00 tirsdag, onsdag og torsdag – nogle dage mere end andre. Jeg har møder om aftenen, da det er der, samarbejdet foregår, og om morgenen løser jeg opgaver, der er kommet ud af vores møder eller opgaver der er kommet uden for min arbejdstid.
